Spark Your Christmas Spirit: 5 Ways to Make Christmas Magical Again

The holiday season is often characterized by its enchanting magic and a unique sense of warmth and joy that fills the air.

As Christmas approaches, it brings with it a spirit of togetherness, kindness, and goodwill. However, in the midst of busy schedules and the chaos of the world and daily life, it can be easy to lose sight of the true essence of this special time of year. Many people have fond memories of Christmas in their youth. My goal as I get older, is to recreate that holiday magic and cheer so it feels special year after year. So, how does one keep the Christmas spirit alive and vibrant in our hearts and homes? Here are five ways to embrace the season and keep the magic alive!

Decorate

Decking the halls for Christmas is like creating your own magical wonderland! Choosing a color theme sets the stage – this year I went for Colorful Jewel Tone Christmas Nostalgia Maximalism… whew that was a mouthful! Whether it's classic red and green, chic silver and gold, or whimsical pastels. It's all about expressing your style! It also doesn’t have to break the bank - try hitting up local thrift shops for unique treasures! Scouring those aisles feels like a treasure hunt, finding vintage baubles, quirky ornaments, and maybe even a retro tree topper. The best part? Each piece tells a story, adding character and charm to your festive setup. Mixing and matching these thrifted gems with modern décor gives your space that eclectic, one-of-a-kind vibe that screams, "Welcome to my Christmas wonderland!”

Embrace Traditions

Rekindle old family traditions or create new ones. Whether it's baking cookies, decorating the tree, or watching classic holiday movies together. For me, it’s not Christmas unless I continue these traditions:

  • Make my mom’s chocolate chip shortbread cookies

  • Have a constant flow of Christmas movies or music playing all day in the background (ideas on the left under “Quick Ideas”

  • Read “Twas the Night Before Christmas” on Christmas Eve

  • Watch “It’s A Wonderful Life” if you are feeling at all blue during the holiday season, this is the movie for you!

Connect with Loved Ones

Christmas is a time for family and friends. Schedule quality time with loved ones, whether through gatherings, video calls, or handwritten letters. Sharing laughter and stories can reignite the warmth of the season. If you don’t have family to connect with during the holidays schedule time or calls with friends.

Experience The Magic

Attend local Christmas events, such as light displays, markets, or concerts. Engaging in community festivities can evoke the enchantment of the holidays and create cherished moments. For me, I love attending The Nutcracker and a Christmas Church service.

Gifting

Instead of focusing on materialism, give gifts with sentimental value. Handmade presents or gifts that reflect the recipient's interests showing thoughtfulness and love. Gifts can be a source of anxiety for families due to being expensive. Consider a gift exchange or Secret Santa! This can relieve pressure and allow everyone the feel comfortable and recognized.
